Before our trip, I kept asking myself—Is Ghana kid-friendly for travel? I wasn’t sure what to expect. Traveling with children can be tricky, especially in a new country. But now, after spending a few weeks exploring Ghana with my wife and two kids, I can honestly say: yes, Ghana is a great place for a family vacation.

Let me share what it was like, what worked for us, and what I wish I knew before going.

Why We Chose to Travel Ghana as a Family

We wanted something different from the usual beach holiday. Ghana stood out because of its mix of culture, history, nature, and friendly people. Also, we had read that traveling to Ghana with children can be rewarding if planned right.

And it really was.

First Impressions

From the moment we landed in Accra, people were warm and welcoming. Ghanaians love kids. Strangers smiled, waved, and helped us whenever we needed directions or advice.

I was nervous about getting around with kids, but taxis and rideshares were easy to use. Most places we visited had decent roads and helpful staff. That made Ghana travel with kids much smoother than expected.

Is Ghana Safe and Easy for Families?

Safety was one of my biggest concerns. But Ghana turned out to be one of the safer countries we’ve visited in West Africa. Of course, like any trip, we stayed alert and avoided risky areas, especially at night. But during the day, walking around cities and villages felt totally fine.

Traveling with infants in Ghana might need extra prep, though. Bring diapers, baby formula, and medicine from home. Those things aren’t always easy to find in smaller towns. We traveled with our toddler, so packing light wasn’t an option, but it was worth it.

Where to Stay: Ghana Family Resorts

If you're planning a Ghana family vacation, where you stay matters. Some hotels in Accra and Cape Coast offer family rooms and playgrounds. We stayed at a small beach resort near Elmina. The kids had space to run around, and we could relax by the sea.

There are a few solid Ghana family resorts if you’re looking for more comfort. Some even offer babysitting or child-friendly meals, which helped us a lot when the local food felt too spicy for the little ones.

What to Do with Kids in Ghana

There are so many things to do as a family in Ghana. Some of the best family activities in Ghana we enjoyed include:

  • Cape Coast Castle – A deep and powerful place to visit. It was heavy, but we used it as a way to talk to our kids about history.

  • Kakum National Park – Walking across the canopy bridge felt like an adventure movie. The kids loved it.

  • Beaches – Our little ones had a blast at the beach. The waves are gentle in some places, like Busua.

  • Art markets – The colors, sounds, and crafts are fun for kids and grown-ups alike.

  • Monkey sanctuary in Boabeng-Fiema – Watching monkeys play up close was one of their favorite moments.

Family tours in Ghana can help take the stress off planning. We joined a small guided tour in the Volta Region that made things easy and fun for everyone.

Tips for Ghana Family Travel

If you’re thinking of traveling to Ghana with children, here are a few things I learned:

  • Bring snacks. Trust me, hungry kids and long drives don’t mix.

  • Carry wipes and hand sanitizer. Some public bathrooms aren’t the cleanest.

  • Make time to rest. The heat and travel can wear kids out fast.

  • Be flexible. Not everything goes as planned in Ghana, and that’s okay.

These little things made our trip smoother and helped everyone stay in a good mood.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, I’m really glad we chose to travel with kids to Ghana. It opened our eyes to a new part of the world and gave our children memories they still talk about.

Sure, it took a bit more planning, and there were a few hard days. But overall, Ghana family travel was more than worth it. The kindness we felt, the beauty we saw, and the fun we had made it one of the best trips we’ve ever taken.

If you're wondering whether Ghana is right for your family—I'd say go for it. Just take it slow, plan ahead, and enjoy the journey.
